Used HOWO Truck Refurbishment: What to Keep, Repair or Replace
Dernières nouvelles de l'entreprise Used HOWO Truck Refurbishment: What to Keep, Repair or Replace

What Should Be Replaced, Repaired, or Retained When Refurbishing a Used HOWO Truck?

When refurbishing a used HOWO truck, retain components that pass measurable mechanical and structural checks, repair parts with isolated serviceable faults, and replace safety-critical or heavily worn items. For construction, mining, quarry and long-haul export use, condition-based refurbishment gives buyers a better result than either replacing everything or relying on cosmetic restoration.

1. Use a Keep–Repair–Replace Decision Before Work Starts

Every used HOWO refurbishment should begin with an itemized condition assessment that separates components to keep, repair or replace before paint and cosmetic work start. This protects serviceable original parts while preventing worn safety-critical items from being hidden behind a finished appearance.

The values below are practical buyer-side targets that can be written into an export specification. They are not universal SINOTRUK factory limits and should be adjusted for the exact engine, brake system, destination rules and intended duty cycle.

Component Keep Repair Replace
Engine Clean start; stable temperature; compression typically ≥26 bar with ≤10% cylinder spread under an agreed screening standard; hot-idle oil pressure ≥0.2 MPa External leaks, injectors, fuel lines, seals or turbo-related faults when the core is sound Persistent low oil pressure, severe blow-by, multiple weak cylinders, metal contamination, cracked block/head
Tires Agreed tread target met; for many export projects ≥8 mm; no bulges, exposed cords or severe cracking Eligible tread-area puncture; pressure or wheel-position correction Below agreed tread target, sidewall damage, exposed cords, bulges, separation or unsuitable rating
Brake lining Preferably >8 mm remaining, even and dry Adjustment or actuator correction when lining and drum remain serviceable At or near applicable wear limit, cracked, loose, contaminated or uneven
Cab Structure straight; mounts, glass, doors, belts and controls sound Local rust, seals, trim, seats, switches, paint or minor panel damage Serious A-pillar, roof, firewall or mount deformation; major perforation or collision damage
Hydraulic hoses Dry, flexible, correctly routed; no cracks or exposed reinforcement Correct routing, clamps or fittings when hose material remains sound Cracked, hardened, blistered, leaking, badly abraded or reinforcement-exposed
Transmission / clutch Normal engagement and shifting; no major noise or active leakage Seals, linkage, clutch adjustment or isolated wear Gear jump-out, major bearing noise, damaged gears, cracked casing or severe clutch failure
Chassis Rails straight; no critical cracks; mounts and crossmembers sound Surface corrosion, rust treatment and non-critical brackets Major rail deformation, critical cracks, unsafe welding or severe corrosion loss

Buyers comparing used HOWO trucks for sale should request this decision sheet before approving work. The list should identify the same truck by chassis or VIN so the final condition can be traced to the original inspection.

2. Retain the Engine Only When Its Core Condition Is Proven

A running engine should be retained only when its mechanical condition supports continued service. Cold starting, exhaust smoke, blow-by, coolant condition, oil pressure, compression balance, leakage, abnormal noise and operating temperature provide more useful evidence than a clean exterior.

For a used HOWO 371HP or 375HP engine, a buyer may use around 26 bar compression, roughly ≤10% cylinder variation and ≥0.2 MPa hot-idle oil pressure as agreed screening targets—not universal SINOTRUK service limits.

External seal leakage, injector problems or fuel-system faults can normally be repaired when the core is sound. Multiple weak cylinders, persistent low oil pressure, heavy blow-by or internal contamination justify overhaul or replacement. A 371HP refurbished HOWO dump truck should therefore be judged on recorded engine condition, not simply on whether it starts.

3. Replace Tires and Brake Parts Before They Become the Buyer’s First Repair Bill

Tires and brake parts should be retained only when they provide useful service margin beyond minimum operating limits. For export preparation, an agreed 8 mm tread target is practical for many retained heavy-truck tires, provided the casing has no bulges, separation, exposed reinforcement or serious sidewall damage.

For regulatory context, U.S. eCFR 49 CFR §393.75 requires at least 4/32 inch tread depth on front truck tires and generally 2/32 inch on other positions, while prohibiting exposed belt material, tread or sidewall separation, flats and certain cuts. The 8 mm figure here is therefore a refurbishment target, not a universal legal minimum.

U.S. eCFR 49 CFR §393.47 also sets brake-lining minimums by brake type and axle position; for non-steering air-drum brakes, 6.4 mm is one specified minimum. A refurbishment contract should target usable thickness above the applicable limit and replace cracked, contaminated, loose or unevenly worn linings before shipment.

4. Repair a Cab for Localized Wear; Replace It for Structural Damage

A structurally sound HOWO cab should be repaired rather than replaced when the damage is localized and does not affect its mounting or safety structure. Repair is appropriate for trim, seals, seats, switches, paint, surface rust or minor panel damage, preserving original mounting and alignment without unnecessary replacement.

Replace the cab when collision damage affects A-pillars, roof structure, firewall, mounts or door geometry, or when corrosion perforates structural areas. Verify seat belts, wipers, mirrors, glazing and warning lamps. Fresh paint is not proof that structural damage has been corrected.

5. Replace Damaged Hydraulic Hoses Instead of Patching Them

A hydraulic pressure hose with cracking, blistering, exposed reinforcement, hardening or active leakage should be replaced, not patched. On used HOWO dump trucks, hose failure can stop unloading, spill hydraulic oil and create instability while the body is raised.

Inspect the route from pump and PTO to the control valve and lifting cylinder. A sound hose may stay after routing or abrasion protection is corrected. Then complete at least three lift-and-lower cycles and recheck the cylinder, fittings, hoses, rear hinge and subframe.

6. Keep the Chassis and Drivetrain Only When Repairs Do Not Hide Structural Risk

Chassis rails, transmission and driveline parts can be retained when their structure and operation remain sound; cosmetic restoration should never conceal cracks, deformation or serious internal wear. Surface corrosion, seals and linkage are repair items, while bent rails, critical cracks, unsafe welding or damaged gearbox internals require stronger corrective action.

Inspect both frame rails, crossmembers, suspension brackets, body mounts and previous welds. Road-test forward and reverse engagement, clutch take-up, required gears, driveline vibration and differential noise. The used HOWO truck refurbishment records guide explains why “inspected,” “repaired” and “replaced” should be documented separately.

7. Match Replacement Decisions to the Truck’s Real Working Duty

The harder the duty cycle and the more remote the site, the more conservative the replacement policy should be. A quarry or mining truck cannot carry the same tolerance for wear as a yard truck working close to workshop support.

Retained 8–10 mm tires may suit one agreed export specification, while a high-load quarry buyer may choose new 12.00R20 tires. The same logic applies to batteries, hoses, suspension bushes and brake linings: expected downtime cost should influence refurbishment scope.

Qingdao Alston Motors uses a condition-based refurbishment approach: serviceable components are retained, isolated faults are repaired, and worn or higher-risk parts are replaced according to the truck’s intended application and the specification agreed with the buyer.

This fits the company’s HOWO truck refurbishment and export experience, where vehicle selection, refurbishment coordination, inspection and pre-shipment verification are treated as separate stages rather than one cosmetic process.

8. Verify the Keep–Repair–Replace Result Before Shipment

A refurbishment decision is complete only when the buyer can verify what happened to the same truck before shipment. The final file should connect the chassis or VIN with before-work evidence, the itemized work list, major replacement records and final functional tests.

At minimum, verify cold starting, idle stability, leaks, gearbox shifting, steering, service and parking brakes, tires, lighting and a controlled road test. Dump trucks should also complete repeated hydraulic cycles. This gives buyers a clearer release standard than exterior photos alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should Every Used HOWO Truck Receive a Remanufactured Engine?

No. Retain the engine when its core condition passes agreed mechanical checks. Overhaul or replace it when internal wear makes continued service unreliable.

Is 8 mm Tire Tread a Legal Minimum?

No. Here, 8 mm is a practical export-refurbishment target. Local road rules and buyer requirements still apply.

Should Brake Linings Always Be Replaced?

No. Serviceable linings with adequate thickness and even, clean wear can be retained. Borderline or contaminated linings should be replaced.

Can a Damaged Hydraulic Hose Be Repaired?

Do not patch a pressure hose with cracking, blistering, exposed reinforcement or leakage. Replace it and retest the system.

Is a Newly Painted Cab Proof of Proper Refurbishment?

No. Cab structure, mounts, alignment, glazing, belts and controls matter more than paint quality.

What Records Should Show Whether Parts Were Kept, Repaired or Replaced?

Request vehicle identity, pre-refurbishment photos, the itemized work list, workshop evidence, major replacement records and final test results.
